Obituary of Betty Rose Peterson

Betty Rose (Elving) Peterson passed away June 13, 2021, at the age of 99 years, 11 months and 19 days. She was born in Lindsborg, Kansas on July 3, 1921, to David and Tekla Elving.
Betty was a member of the National Honor Society, and beginning at an early age was an accomplished Flautist. She was selected as a Kansas candidate for the All-American Youth Orchestra. Over time, Betty played in various orchestras, and also taught flute for many years
Following graduation from Lindsborg High School, Betty attended Bethany College. On March 27, 1943, Betty married Harry (Pete) Peterson at Messiah Lutheran Church, becoming a USAF Officer’s wife. Having been stationed in Japan twice, Betty grew to love that country’s people and culture.
She was an avid reader of non-fiction, enjoyed flower gardening and was a life-long skillful Bridge player. Through the years, Betty was a member of several organizations, as well as being a generous supporter of the Arts, PBS, and NPR.
She is survived by her daughters: Christine Shwaiko (Lex) of Stockton Springs, ME, and Kathy Peterson of Lindsborg, KS; sons: Tom Peterson (Naomi) of Emporia, KS, James Peterson of Hartford, KS, and William Peterson (Sandy) of Pleasanton, KS; daughter-in-law: Kathy Peterson, of Bishop, CA; as well as 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Harry; brother: Richard Elving; and son: Jon Peterson.
Cremation has been chosen and services will be held at a later date.
