Obituary of Lucille Hawkinson
Please share a memory of Lucille to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Alice Lucille Hawkinson, 92, passed away April 1, 2015. She was born December 4, 1922, at the family home in rural Marquette, Kansas to Alvin and Edla (Dahlsten) Hawkinson. As an infant she was baptized by Rev. J.P. Aurelius and in 1937 confirmed by Rev. O.L. Larson.
As a life long member of Freemount Lutheran Church, she served by teaching Sunday school, was on the Church Council, and was chairperson of the worship music committee for many years. She was an active participant of the Freemount Women of the ELCA.
Lucille enjoyed playing the piano and received inspiration when playing the hymns of the church which she willingly shared with others. She sang in the Messiah Chorus for forty-two years and frequently attended musical concerts at the college.
She graduated from Lindsborg High School, Bethany College, and earned a masters degree at Fort Hays University.
In 1942 her career as a teacher began by teaching four years in rural schools in McPherson County. She taught in Sedgwick and Lyons, Kansas and twenty-seven years at Sunset School in Salina, Kansas.
In 1984 a memory book was given to her at a retirement party. Her principal wrote the following: "Some qualities that I feel make you a competent, successful teacher are your cooperative attitude, your pleasant smile, and your concern for each student." Another administrator wrote, "You have been and still are a positive Christian influence to your pupils, your peers, and your friends."
She was a charter member and past president of the Salina Alpha Kappa chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, a professional teacher's sorority. As a life member of the Kansas Association of retired school personnel, she belonged to units both in Lindsborg and Salina.
She was a member of the Lindsborg Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed the fellowship of other senior citizens at the Lindsborg Senior Center.
Her parents and a sister, Hazel Christensen, preceded her in death. Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Goudy, Eugene, Oregon; nieces, Marjorie (Jim) Gallagher, Wichita, Kansas, and Kathy Goudy and husband George Hendrix, Carbondale, Colorado; and a nephew, David Goudy, Eugene, Oregon.
The Bible verse chosen by her confirmation class was Revelations 2:10 - "Be thou faithful unto death and I will give you the crown of life". Lucille remained faithful and used the class motto: "Be Thou Faithful" as her guide through life.
Burial will occur Friday, April 10, at 9:30 a.m. at Freemount Cemetery, with funeral service following at 10:30a.m., Bethany Home Chapel.
Memorials may be designated to the Freemount Lutheran Church, Bethany Home, or Lindsborg Senior Center in care of Christians Funeral Home 103 N. Washington, Lindsborg, KS 67456.
