So sorry to hear of Dr. Murphy's passing. I know my dad has enjoyed working with him on the Bike Trail Conservancy these past several months. I certainly enjoyed having him as my Calculus professor at Bethany while I was still attending Lindsborg High. He certainly made me feel at ease in what could have been a very challenging situation for me! I have always held very fond thoughts of those times/classes - and revisited those memories often here recently, now that my own children are taking calculus! My thoughts and prayers are with the family, and the entire Bethany College and Lindsborg communities.

Dear Judy, My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. While I never had him for a math class, I got to know him through you as one of our Theta sponsors. He had such a great sense of humor and interest in everything. He will be missed. Class of 75.

So very saddened to hear the news of John's passing. In the four years I was at Bethany, and for a good many years afterwords, he illuminated math for me beyond what I thought I could ever learn. Today, I'm good at what I do for a living, in part due to the patience and ability to explain concepts Dr. Murphy possessed. I'm a much better man for having been his student. Rest in peace, John, and your family will be in the prayers of Schelly and I in the days to come.

Best and favorite professor while at Bethany. 1976 graduate with a math minor. So fortunate to have ended up in his class track. My daughter graduated in 2006 and after ceremony I approached him to see if he would remember me. He did and even gave my daughter grief in math class because he remembered who her father was. Personal relationships, home phone numbers and caring about students as a whole---that is what makes a small college (and its professors) so special!!!

Dear Judy and Family, I am saddened to hear of Dr. Murphy's passing. He was an incredible educator whose dedication to teaching was like nothing I have seen before or since. Not a week ago, as I worked through a math problem for work, I quoted him to some co-workers to the effect of, "Why mess up something as beautiful as math with the real world." From the dry humor in the classroom to when I split open my knee jogging and ended up limping to their house, John and Judy personified all that was good about Bethany. I will always be grateful to both of you. May God bless your family in this difficult time.

Judy, I have so many fond memories of Dr. Murphy from my days at Bethany...from being scared to death of him the first day to accompanying him and the rest of the class to a dorm room to wake up a classmate who was missing from class to dinner and beer at your house and so many more. I still can't believe that he answered the phone at 11 pm and talked us through problems...I thought that was so crazy! He made me work harder than any other professor but I felt so proud when I earned that grade...even the "C" in Real Analysis. Without Dr. Murphy I may have never discovered my love of math and how rewarding it felt to solve a problem. He was a fantastic professor and a great man. My prayers go out to you and the girls during this difficult time. May God give you peace and grace through the days to come. Rest in Peace Dr. Murphy

We are so saddened to learn of John's passing. He made tremendous contributions to Bethany College and to Lindsborg. He was such a strong influence in the lives of the many, many students he taught. We remember Jen Jenkins saying, "We have such a nice, competent, enthusiastic young man who has come to teach mathematics at Bethany College." That young man was John, and he stuck around for a long, long time, continuing to be the one who so competently taught decades of students at Bethany. Our sympathies go to Judy, Ellie, Annie, and all of the extended family.
