W.R. or Bill as I knew him back in 1968 while we were in the U.S. Army was one of the finest individuals I met. He was my bunk mate for three months at Ft. Benning, GA. After our training I never saw him again. For many years, I tried to find him. He told me he was from Iowa. So, that is where I spent all my efforts, with frustration. Then, one day, another army buddy to whom I express my frustration, called and said, "Bob, I emailed four names, addresses and telephone numbers. I am pretty sure Chestnut has got to be one of them."
Wow! I called the third on on the list first. It was Bill. We talked as if we saw each other just yesterday. We were on the phone well over an hour and thirty minutes. We exchanged a few emails. In August 2014, I thought I would drive out there and visit him. But, I very unfortunately changed my mind. I so regret having done that.
Bill, I missed you all these years. May God bless you and rest your soul. May He, also, ease the the pain of your loss to all of your family.
You are on fine and honorable man. And, I am better for having stood in your shadow, though far too briefly. With love, my brother. With love, I say good bye.

It was an extreme pleasure to know WR. But it was even better to have had the opportunity to shine his light in an article that he and I worked on a couple of years ago for a Kansas publication with regard to his passion of keeping time alive. Lindsborg had a great man in WR, and he will not be forgotten.

I was so sorry to hear of WR (Bill) Chestnut passing. I have just gotten to know him over the last year and a half. I work on the Meadowlark Trail Committee and he contacted me about working with the Smoky Valley Economic Development Committee on some projects for the trail. I have enjoyed getting to know him during our conversations and I will truly miss the enthusiasm he had for the trail and for the well being of Lindsborg in general. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. I just saw him on Saturday at the Ribbon Cutting for the trail. We shared our mutual excitement for this event. I will not forget sharing that moment with him.

My heart is very sad and the tears are flowing at the loss of my dear friend William "WR" "Bill" Chestnut, the Lindsborg Clocksmith and a good fellow I was proud to call my friend. I can't believe he is gone. I will miss you at Monday night guitars and can't believe you won't be coming to my karaoke parties and help me get things started. I have no doubt you are in heaven but we will miss you so much here. Tell Ernie hello. My sympathies to his wife, Denise Chestnut and son Jason and family... the world truly is a lesser place today.... a good friend is gone and missed.
