Obituary of Naomi Elizabeth Nelson
Please share a memory of Naomi to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Naomi Elizabeth (Markley) Nelson, 94, died on December 27, 2023. Beloved mother, wife, and friend, she will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her.
Naomi was born on July 5, 1929, in Council Grove, Kansas, to Lylia and Lay Markley, and spent her formative years in Delavan, Kansas. In 1950, she married Calvin Gene Nelson. Her life was devoted to being a farmer’s wife in Burdick, Kansas, and to raising her two sons. At the time of Gene’s death in 2000, Naomi and Gene had been married nearly 50 years.
As a long-time member of Hebron Lutheran Church and the larger Burdick community, Naomi was deeply involved in civic and church activities, contributing her time and talents, whether baking Swedish rye bread or painting various craft projects. Her greatest passion, after her own children were grown, was caring for many children in the community, who no doubt remember their “Nomie” with fondness.
Naomi was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gene, and brother Bill.
She is survived by her sons Thomas and David (Jennifer Gadd); her two grandchildren, Rachel and Maggie; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 2, 2023 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Lindsborg, with Pastor Dallas Peterson officiating. Family burial will follow at Hebron Lutheran Cemetery, rural Burdick, KS.
Memorial contributions may be made to Riverview Estates or to the Hebron Lutheran Church, Burdick, KS. Memorials may be sent in care of Crick-Christians Funeral Home, 103 N. Washington, Lindsborg, KS 67456.
