Obituary of Sarah Jane Smith

Sarah Jane Smith was born February 23, 1920 at Marquette,KS, the daughter of Clarence and Carrie (Uhler) Sjogren.  She was known by many as “Bob” or “Grandma Bob”.  The exact history of the “Bob” name is unclear.  She died at the age of 99 on March 16, 2019 at Riverview Estates.

 

She married Kristen K. Smith November 22, 1942.  He passed away February 27, 1986.  She was also preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Carrie Sjogren, sisters Eleanor Burnison and Lenoir Ekdhal and brother Faber Sjogren.

 

Sarah Jane was a lifetime resident of Marquette.  Her memberships included: Elim Lutheran Church, Marquette Women’s Literary Club, American Legion Axillary, National Association of Postmasters (retired), and Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel.

 

She had many varied occupations in her life including: school teacher, managing a rooming house while raising her family, Sunday school teacher, Cub Scout den leader, postmaster, and Meals-on-Wheels driver.  She sold western wear at the Tack Room and sodas at City Sundries. Sarah Jane was very involved in her church and the annual Swedish Supper.  Her involvement with the Legion Axillary included helping with the pancake breakfasts and cutting/sewing jean strips to make rag rugs for fund rising. 

 

She is survived by her two sons, Alan Smith & Jeanne of Wichita, KS, and Charles Smith of Burlington, KS.  Sarah Jane had 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.  Her extended family also included many nieces and nephews. 

 

Sarah Jane loved people and her family.  She was a strong influence to many in her family & community.  Much history was made by her presence.  Much is lost in her passing.

 

The funeral will be held 10:00 am on Saturday, March 23 at Elim Lutheran Church, 403 N Lincoln St, Marquette, with Pastor Larry Cross officiating.  Nursery services will be provided.  Burial will be in Marquette Lutheran Cemetery following the funeral.  There will be no visitation.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to Elim Lutheran Church or to the American Legion Auxiliary in Marquette.  Memorial contributions may be sent in care of Crick-Christians Funeral Home, 103 N. Washington, Lindsborg, KS 67456.
