Obituary of Ernest Carl "Pete" Gustafson

Ernest Gustafson, 94, of Smolan, passed away September 13, 2016. He was born March 31, 1922, the son of Milton and Adeline (Ostenberg) Gustafson in rural Smolan. Ernest was a proud Army veteran of World War II receiving honors including the Bronze Star.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Gordon and Clifford, and sisters: Dorothy, Genevieve, and Helen.
Ernest is survived by his nephews; Terrell Olson (Karen) of Salina, Keith Olson (Dea) of Topeka, nieces: Debbie Worden (Ken) of Richardson, Texas, Donita Daniel of Garland, Texas, Sherri Moss (Danny) and Vicki Sloas of Wichita, Kansas and many great nieces and nephews and many great-great nieces and nephews.
He was a graduate of Smolan High School after which he served 3 years in the U.S. Army 104th infantry division. This took him to Germany, France, Belgium, and Holland. Upon the end of his service, he returned to the family farm where he spent the rest of his life. He served 57 years as the Washington Township treasurer. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Lindsborg and the VFW, Salina.
“Pete” was a dedicated farmer/stockman who was always willing to lend a hand to others. He was truly at peace doing chores, milking, feeding, plowing, planting God’s beautiful earth.
Visitation will be Monday, September 19, from 4-7pm with family present from 5-7pm at Christians Funeral Home, Lindsborg.
A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, September 20, at 2:00pm at Salemsborg Lutheran Church, Smolan, with burial following at Smolan Cemetery.
Memorials may be designated to the Salemsborg Cemetery Fund in care of Christians Funeral Home 103 N. Washington St. Lindsborg, KS 67456.
