Obituary of Helene Elizabeth Reissig
Please share a memory of Helene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Helene Elizabeth Reissig was born December 26, 1917 at Marquette, Kansas—the oldest of five children of Edna (Krig) and Oscar Johnson. She passed away at Lindsborg Community Hospital on September 2, 2015 with her children at her side.
Helene’s father died when she was 12, and she became a major help to her mother in raising her siblings: Irene, Rosalie, Thelma, and Eldon. She married Carl Reissig on September 1, 1940. They began their married life in Marquette, and later moved to Assaria where they raised their four sons: Cloyce, Raymond, Larry and Robert. Helene worked for the Coffee Cup Café and Bethany College in food service, and was custodian of Assaria Lutheran Church. She was very active in her church, teaching Sunday school, and held many offices in LCW.
When she retired, she and Carl relocated to Lindsborg, and enjoyed making new friends at Trinity United Methodist Church, and the Lindsborg Senior Center while continuing old friendships in Assaria. Carl passed away June 1, 1997; but she continued attending church and great-grandchildren activities, and eating at the Senior Center daily. She moved to Bethany Home on September 1, 2009. At Bethany Home, she participated in most of the activities, and one of her favorite things was riding the surrey whenever it was going around town.
She loved to cook and sew, and make quilts for the children and grandchildren. We all enjoyed gathering and finding fresh cinnamon rolls on the counter, and plenty of Swedish rye bread to eat! She was a caring person, and the family and her many friends will miss the many cards she sent.
Helene was preceded in death by her parents, Edna and Oscar Johnson, husband, Carl, sisters Rosalie and Irene, and son Larry who was killed in Viet Nam May 13, 1967.
She will be missed by all who knew and loved her—her sons Cloyce (Vickie) Reissig of Greers Ferry, AR; Raymond (Shirley) Reissig of Lindsborg; and Robert (Kathryn) Reissig of McPherson, 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great- grandchildren, brother Eldon (Twila) Johnson of Pflugerville, Texas, sister Thelma of Leavenworth, and many friends and loved ones.
Memorials may be given to Assaria Lutheran Church.
