I first met Chuck when as a volunteer lawyer for the Church Federation of Chicago. One of the sites for our legal clinics was Holy Family Lutheran church, a mission parish in the Cabrini-Green housing project of Chicago. Holy Family was then served by Reverend Fred Downing, now deceased. Chuck was an occasional officiant at Holy Family, where I transferred my church membership and my wife my wife ultimately became a member. She and I got to know Fred and Chuck well, and we treasured their friendship. Holy Family cooperated with nearby St. Joseph Church and Father Santo, then its priest, in joint summer school for underprivileged children (primarily African American or Hispanic).
Pastor Downing's efforts led to the founding of Holy Family Lutheran school (now Holy Family School after merger with St.Gregory's (Episcopal) School for boys, also primarily for African American children. Both Fred and Chuck left the Chicago, but Cindy and I maintained contact with them. They were committed Christians who served the poor and deprived. If Lutherans canonized saints, Fred and Chuck would make the cut.

I was an acquaintance of Chuck, but always admired his intense dedication to the life of the mind, and more generally his resolute desire to live a full life no matter what the challenges. God has not blessed us with many like him. May he rest in peace.

I'm so privileged to have known Chuck during his activities in the Strobe-Gibson activity facility at Bethany College. Chuck was quite a fixture. I wish all individuals had the enthusiasm toward exercise that Chuck did and I hope I will be as active as he was at his age. Each time I saw Chuck he had a positive aura about him that made me feel good. He always greeted me by name and was happy to see me each time.
I wish the family the very best. I hope I might have the opportunity of attending his funeral. I am a Bethany faculty member who lives in Topeka so it may be difficult. May God continue to bless the family and may Chuck's memory linger in our lives for many years to come.

I was very saddened by the news of Pastor Christensen's passing. I feel blessed to have known him, even though it was just as an acquaintance. I saw him often on the Bethany College campus as he was going to classes or training in the weight room. He would always say hello and ask how things were going. I admire his passion and dedication to keep learning and to stay active. I will miss seeing him on our campus.
