Please share a memory of Dr. to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dr. John Edward Hult, M.D. of Corvallis, Oregon, passed away on July 7, 2014. He joined his beloved wife, Adeline, who died January 3, 2014. John was born June 21, 1924 in Moshi, Tanganyika on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, where his parents were serving as Lutheran missionaries. When John was two years old, his family returned to the US and settled near Springfield, Missouri where he attended Blackman primary school, then graduated as valedictorian from Rogersville high school. John is a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. He considered himself very fortunate to have been sent to medical school by the army and graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 1949. He married Mary Louise Lockhart in 1948. A daughter, Margaret was born in St. Louis and a second daughter, Elly joined them in Munich where he started his medical practice at the 5th General Dispensary caring for military personnel and their dependents. Upon discharge, the family settled in Aurora, Colorado where he was able to complete his pediatric residency. A son, Dan was born in 1953. His wife, Louise died in 1954. In 1956, he met Adeline Lundquist, who joined him in his dream of serving the people of the land of his birth as a medical missionary. A fourth child, Martha came along during those years of adventure, joy, and challenge in Tanganyika. In 1961, the Hult family settled in Aurora Colorado where fifth child, Tim completed the family. The next three decades were filled with his pediatric work, singing in choirs, memorable camping trips, and family road trips. John and Adeline were very active with an organization called Amigos de Las Americas, which trained young people to administer immunizations in rural areas of Latin America. After retirement in 1987, John and Ad settled in Corvallis, Oregon, where they continued to enrich the lives of everyone they met. Their lives were filled with travelling, nurturing grandchildren, writing and publishing their memoirs. John enjoyed pitching horseshoes in tournaments. Until the past 3 years, he swam almost daily, logging his laps until he reached over 1000 miles. Grace Lutheran Church has been an integral part of their lives. Timberhill Place became their home in 2011 and they daily expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have these blessed years together in a warm and caring community. John was preceded in death by Mary Louise Hult, and Adeline Loraine Hult and son, Daniel Edwin Hult; siblings, Paul Hult, Ingrid Youngdahl, Martha Wiemkin, and David Hult. He is survived by siblings: Veda Magnuson, Eunice Will, Carl Hult, Gus Hult, and Mary Orvis; by children, Margaret Ruud, Elly Scott, Martha Norman, and Tim Hult, 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly. Dr. John will be remembered for his deep compassion, his irrepressible humor, his warm tenor voice, and his vivid storytelling. The driving force in his life was to leave a person happier than when he met them. A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 11, at Freemount Lutheran Church Cemetery. Memorials may be designated to Grace Lutheran Church in Corvallis, Oregon or to a charity of your choice in care of Christians Funeral Home, 103 N. Washington, PO Box 386, Lindsborg, KS 67456.
