Obituary of Bertis Wickstrom

Please share a memory of Bertis to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
David was born April 29, 1953, the son of Bertis and Joan (Flohr) Wickstrom in Lindsborg, Kansas. He grew up in Marquette, attended Marquette Elementary and Junior High, and graduated from Marquette High School in 1971. Following graduation, he attended Kansas State University for 2 ½ years and then returned to farm. David was united in marriage to Peggy Norton on September 21, 1985, at Freemount Lutheran Church. His father, Bertis, preceded him in death. David leaves behind many loved ones: wife, Peggy Wickstrom, son, Matt Wickstrom, mother, Joan Wickstrom, sister, Cynthia Hulse and husband Mike, and nephews, Brandon and Lance Hulse, all of Marquette. Along with his immediate family, he leaves two special aunts, Mary Nolan and Eleanor Lundquist (Marquette) and cousins Barb Scheck (Russell), Richard Gregwire (McPherson), Roberta Jaye (Lindsborg), Marcia Stockham (Manhattan), and Kathy Windall (Tucson, Arizona). David was passionate about many things. He loved K-State after Coach Snyder came and turned the program around. He loved K-State after Coach Snyder returned and turned the program around AGAIN. David was passionate about hunting and the camaraderie that it created. His favorite color was camouflage. He loved a good dove season, and the Ellwood feast that followed. He loved the times in the duck blind with Miles, Max, and Chad, and his first use of a lay-down blind with Danny. Along with hunting, he was crazy about Duck Dynasty. He liked them way before they were famous. He taught Matt to say, "There is nothing more godly than a Christian woman picking duck." David was also passionate about his politics -- if you wanted to fire him up, just mention Obama or Lindsborg. He was fiercely loyal to the Marquette school system and hoped to protect and preserve it. He was fiercely loyal to the Marquette Community. Over the years he and his friends gathered at the hardware store, elevator, and café, and solved the problems of the world. Farming was another love of David's, but working for him was not for the faint of heart. He wanted things done HIS WAY and NOW. He was prone to tirades when his commands were not followed precisely. He had a love-hate relationship with the cows. He grumbled mightily during calving season, but he loved watching calves romp. He loved his labs - starting with several Sam dogs, then Dusty, and ending with Rex. In addition to his love of animals, he loved all his family. Most of all, he loved his wife and son. He was amazed to be a father at forty, and embraced fatherhood with all his heart. David's life wasn't nearly long enough, but it was full enough with family, friends, fun, and so many memories. Visitation will be Friday, January 3, from 5-7 p.m. at Elim Lutheran Church, Marquette. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 4th, at Elim Lutheran Church, with burial following at Marquette City Cemetery. Memorials may be designated for the Marquette Education Fund or Marquette EMS, in care of Christians Funeral Home, 103 N. Washington, PO Box 386, Lindsborg, Kansas 67456.
