My mother was Penny Hardin. She and Ernie were first cousins. They spent their youth together on holidays between Hastings, Nebraska and Norton, Kansas. Ernie would always comment on how pretty Penny was. She would always say he was her "Kissin" Cousin! She died in 1987. After that, Ernie did what he could to stay in touch with me. His family and children meant the world to him, so we saw him less after his grandkids were born. He called me a few times last year, wanting to come visit me in the Ozarks. That never happened. We are finally making a trip to Kansas this weekend and I called his number to find it was disconnected. Goosebumps ran down my spine and as I googled his name, I knew he passed on and then found his obituary. My deepest sympathy goes out to those he left behind. His laugh was contagious. His love never ending.

I'm very sad to hear about the passing of E H as the Hardin family knew him. His personality and laugh, I'll always remember. He was a very special person to me and one that always took the time to entertain me and everyone around him. What a unique individual and very talented. With 3 sisters and 3 girl cousins, Ernie was my male big brother that I never had. Loved going to Norton to visit Ernie and Ron & Guy and Ovie. Seems like yesterday.

We were so very sorry to hear about Ernie's passing. He was a good friend of my parents - Niles and Betty Gibson. My folks are both gone now too with mom passing last October. He always asked me about my mom when I saw him. When we moved back here in 2001 he became our friend too. He always had a smile, always wanted to talk about most anything, and was a very sweet person. We will miss him at the Ol Stuga and at the Hartter's home. My daughter-in-law also took care of him at the Salina Cancer Center. She became his friend too. He was contagious and had a great spirit. We will miss you Ernie!

Ernie was the real deal; there was no pretense, no guile, just a nice guy. We exchanged letters after we moved from Lindsborg, and I will miss him.
