Charles Marshall Spilman was born December 12, 1919 to James A. Spilman and Minnie M. (Shaffer) Spilman. He attended school at Hope School and Roxbury High School. After graduating from school, Marshall joined his father in farming on the homestead. He married Muriel Aline Joiner Jan. 17, 1944. That same year, he entered the Army and served with the 102nd Infantry in Germany. His primary duty was to see that communication was maintained between the battle front and the command centers. Marshall built his own home in 1946 next to his parents and across the road from a dear Aunt May and Uncle Andrew. Besides farming, he worked at the Roxbury Bank, Moore Grain, and the J. Lynch Elevator at Kipp, Ks. Marshall and Aline had three children - Marsha Diane, Charles Bradley and Shirley Mae. He and Aline moved off the farm in 1973 and settled in Lindsborg. Aline died Jan 19, 1988. He met Blanche Louise (Andrews) Hawkinson and married her on Dec. 7, 1992. With this marriage came the blessings of an expanded family, including Blanche's children Bill Hawkinson, Marlene (Bob) Brazell, Linda (Terry) McBurney, and Dan (Katie) Hawkinson. Marshall enjoyed boating and camping throughout his life and made a close circle of friends while enjoying those activities. He was also proud to be a member of the American Legion for 66 years. He was preceded in death by wife, Aline, daughter, Diane, his parents, brothers: Vernon and Vivian, and sister, Ruth Nirider. He is survived by his wife, children, 12 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM Tuesday January 22, at Christians Funeral Home, Lindsborg. A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, January 23, at 10:30 AM at Roxbury United Parish, Roxbury, with burial following at Valley View Cemetery, Roxbury.
