Margaret D. Carlson passed away at Bethany Home, Lindsborg, KS, on February 26, 2012.
Margaret was born on September 4, 1924 in Marquette, KS to George E. and Charlotte L. (Loder) Richards. She grew up on a farm, attended Marquette schools, and graduated from Marquette High School in 1942. She attended Bethany College and obtained her teaching certificate. She taught three years in Saline County schools. She married LT JG Terence E. Carlson on May 8, 1945, at the Marquette Covenant Church while he was en route from the Atlantic to the Pacific theatre.
Margaret was devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. In addition to being a homemaker, she enjoyed being the secretary at Soderstrom Elementary school for 20 years. Margaret was involved in church music from the age of 10 to 72 years old playing the piano and then the organ. She was the church organist for over 30 years. She taught private piano lessons after retiring from her secretarial career.
Margaret served with the Covenant Women at the local, conference, and national levels. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Weekday Church School. She sang in the Messiah Chorus for over 40 years, played the organ for the Anderson Funeral Home and other area churches. She was very involved in the Gideons Auxiliary.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Genoa George;
her daughter, Mary Martin; her grandson, Brian Shultz, and great-grandson, Caden Carlson. She is survived by Terence, her husband of 66 years; her daughters, Marsha (Jim) Wilson, Rachel (Aaron) Carlson, Miriam (Pat) Crockett, Rita (Craig) Shultz, son,
Daniel (Jane) Carlson, and son-in-law, John (Jolene) Martin.
Her grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Aaron (Rachelle) Wilson, Jennifer (Adam) Brown, Justin (Mary) Carlson, Brandon (Lindsey) Carlson, Vonda Peterson, Daniel (Olivia) Martin, Nicole Peterson, Nathan Martin, Chad Peterson, Tim (Becky) Martin, Austin Crockett, Michael (Katy) Shultz, David (Jocelyn) Shultz, Rebecca (Brock) Fleming, Kenneth (Jessica) Carlson, Sara Carlson, Kimberly (Skyler) Reinert, and Stefan Carlson.
Her great-grandchildren: Maryella Brown, Andrew Carlson, Amy Carlson, Bethany Carlson, Conner Carlson, Kylee Carlson, Hadley Carlson, Mary Martin, Jackson Shultz, Maggie Shultz, and Emery Carlson.
Visitation will be Thursday from 4-7pm, with family present from 6-7pm at Christians Funeral Home, Lindsborg.
A funeral service will be held at 2pm Friday at Evangelical Covenant Church, Lindsborg, with burial following at Smoky Hill Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to Gideons International or Evangelical Covenant Church for music or children's ministry.
