Sincere sympathy to John's family. I always enjoyed our visits when he was in Red Cloud. My favorite painting of his "On Lovely Creek" graces our living room and I'm sure many homes are enjoying the beauty of his talents! He was a special person and he will be missed.

I am sorry to learn of John's passing. I have spent many happy hours in Red Cloud enjoying his paintings inspired by Willa Cather's literature. I show copies to my students to help them understand Cather's work, and I enjoy a print of "On Lovely Creek" on my office wall. The print and its frame were gifts from my parents to commemorate a time we spent together in Red Cloud. His work lives on and touches people both intellectually and emotionally. He was a very talented artist, and his art is an immensely important part of the Cather experience in Red Cloud and beyond. Please accept my sympathy on your loss. Steve Shively

I first saw John Bergers' Willa Cather art in the 1980s, on a Christmas card from Mildred Bennett. I was enchanted--and became even more so as I saw more of his work at the Cather Foundation in Red Cloud. With unassuming artistry, he brought the visual world of Cather to life. And when I met John, as I did many times in Red Cloud, I was also impressed by the depth of his knowledge and his commitment. Just this past fall, as Tom Gallagher and I were putting together the current issue of The Willa Cather Newsletter and Review, we were delighted to be able to include John's wonderfully evocative image of the barn dance in Cather's story, "The Bohemian Girl." John's art is a great resource for Cather readers, and it will continue to be so for generations to come. Like many others, I am very grateful. My sincere sympathy to John's family and friends. I was introduced to John by his grandson (my fiance) Josh Bergers about a year ago at John's art show in Red Cloud, Nebraska. I enjoyed our conversations on the phone about weather, the Bergers' family history and our visits when he came to Josh and I's home. He was a smart and caring man who I am blessed to have met and soon be a part of his family. I am deeply sorry Emily, Matt, Josh, Dick, Lan, Julie-Ann and the rest of his wonderful family for your loss. I love you all so very much.
