Obituary of Doug Johnson

Please share a memory of Doug to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Douglas Ernest Johnson, 76, of McPherson, Kansas passed away at his home on October 3, 2023 surrounded by his family. Doug was born in McPherson, Kansas on October 20, 1946, son of Florence Irene (Corwin) and Eben Johnson. Doug attended Roxbury and Lindsborg grade schools, Lindsborg High School, and graduated from Marquette High School in 1964. Doug was a member of New Gottland Lutheran Church in McPherson, Kansas. Doug started working for Frank Black Pipe and Supply Company right out of high school. He started driving a semi, worked his way into management during his tenure, and after 52 dedicated years, retired in 2016 as their Sales Manager. He made many friends along the way. Doug enjoyed his trucking years, occasionally taking his dad, wife, and kids along for the ride. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, checkers, dominos, and listening to country music. He especially enjoyed the occasional drive through Maxwell Game Reserve to see the buffalo. Doug loved God, his family, and friends. To know Doug was to love Doug. His baby blue eyes would change depending on his mood or how he was feeling- they were mesmerizing. On August 1, 1967, Doug was United in marriage to Mary J. Nichols at Elim Lutheran Church in Marquette, Kansas. Doug and Mary raised their 5 children on their “little piece of Heaven on earth” in the country outside of McPherson. Doug worked hard for his family. Christmases were always important to Doug because that was the time that he wanted to spoil his wife and kids as much as he could. Doug’s surviving grandchildren all spent as much time as they could on the property exploring and appreciating the great outdoors. Sundays were always family time, which usually included a BBQ (with way too much food). Doug is survived by his wife Mary Johnson of McPherson, Kansas; his children Paula Goldthwaite of McPherson, Karen Weltmer (Eric) of Hutchinson, David Johnson (Becky) of Paola, Danyelle Johnson (Gary) of McPherson, and Kelsey Johnson of McPherson; his grandchildren Scott Weltmer (Alicia) of Manhattan, Aaron Weltmer of Hutchinson, Kailey Johnson (Daniel) of Topeka, Logan Johnson of Paola, and Isaac Johnson of Paola; his brother Tom Johnson (Bev) of McPherson, sister in law Jane Johnson of McPherson; including other relatives and many friends. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Jerry Johnson, and his grandson Jase Trevor Johnson. Visitation will be at Crick- Christians Funeral Home 103 N. Washington St., Lindsborg, Kansas on Saturday October 7, 2023, from 10am to 12pm with family present. The graveside service will follow the visitation at 1pm at Roxbury Valley View Cemetery in Roxbury, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice & Home Care of Reno County, the City of McPherson Fire Department or New Gottland Lutheran Church.
