My condolences go out to Suzanne, Matt, Mike and Mark and their families. When I saw the notice of Gary’s death, I was really shocked. In the spring of 2022, my wife, Pat, and I were going to be passing through Kansas, so I gave Gary a call to see if he was going to be around. He had a medical procedure scheduled for that day so we were not going to be able to get together. I wished him good luck and that was the last time we talked. Our friendship started in school in Tracy, MN. We played football together from 7th through 12th. Both of us played varsity as sophomores which was a rocky year for Tracy High School Football. The next year got better and when we were seniors it was awesome. Besides having great success, 8-0, no playoffs back then, the late Scott Vahle, Dave McClellan, Gary, and I had fun playing Whist. Gary and I played against Scott and Dave and it was always intense. After high school our families went in different ways but we always connected at high school reunions. During retirement Pat and I had the opportunity to stop and visit Gary and Suzanne a couple of times in Lindsborg. Those memories will always be cherished. Gary and I also connected at Leo Sebastian’s funeral, Bill Bolin’s funeral and Art Marben’s tribute at Tracy High School. Our senior football team connection always bonded me to all three of those guys. Words cannot describe what they meant to me. Rest in peace Gary, you will be missed forever.

I was fortunate to be his 1st QB when he was a new football coach in Walnut Grove. Tremendous mentor, trainer and human being. I am proud and lucky to have known him. I will keep him and his family in my prayers.
Best,

To the Sandbo Family, my families prayers go out to you all. Coach Sandbo played a big part of my life when I came to Bethany, on the football field he was a great teacher and Coach, but more than that he kept a young kid in line who was far from home. Gary was like a second dad, when you screwed up he let you know about it just like my own father did, I guess you call that taught love. The Marchitto Family has you all in our thoughts and prayers.

I remember shaking Coach's hand back in 1975 after playing a FB game against his Sioux City East High team. At that time, I had no idea how he would impact my life in those years after high school. I was blessed to have been able to play both football/baseball for him...and to also coach with him after my playing days. He was a leader, role model, and mentor who shaped the lives of more than we will ever know. He will be greatly missed. Our prayers go out to Suzanne, Matt, Mark, Mike and their families. God bless to all those hurting with this loss.

Gary was a friend of our family for many years. I remember him playing with my siblings and me at the Tracy Swimming Pool when we were little. Along with Suzanne, he was always a favorite lifeguard and swimming instructor. My parents somehow got him to dress up as Santa and visit our home at Christmas. Somewhere there are pictures of us sitting on his lap, telling ‘Santa’ our Christmas wishes. A special memory for us. Gary maintained a friendship with my parents for many years and had a special place in their hearts. We send our sympathies to his family.

VERY Sad. Played lots of pickup BB with him, as he just showed up on the practice floors (h.s. and Armory) now and then. + 2-3 years as Engineers teammate. ALWAYS made me feel better than I was!
Wrote him a few times during Vietnam war, per Pastor Pete instructions. Discussed ‘Glen’ memories too. He replied that he was safely in the rear lines, but war was run by ‘a bunch of mental midgets.’
Didn’t realize Alma had died. She championed Ron’s ‘nomination’ to the THS ‘wall of fame.’

Seeing all the tributes to my "Best Buddy" growing up in Tracy, MN surely reflects the boy he was, the young adult he was & the man he became! Gary was always the most confident, efficient, gracious and outstanding person you would ever want to meet. He was always the leader, but always made everyone beside him feel better about their abilities than they may have been. Playmates at our earliest ages and classmates and teammates throughout high school, Gary was the person everyone wanted to be like! After our school years, Gary became the "Best Man" in our wedding. He was a tremendous father, husband, leader and inspiration to all who had the fortune of knowing him. Gary followed in the footsteps of several of his high school and college coaches, but no more than Leo Sebastian, Art Marben, and Bill Bolin. (Three of his favorites who each in their own way helped mentor him as he grew up after losing his father at the tender age of 9.) These men as well as many others I'm sure are very proud of the man Gary became! Our condolences to Suzanne, Matt, Mike, and Mark and your families at this special time! We miss him dearly, but knowing that Gary indeed led a "LIFE WELL LIVED, AS A GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT," now is in heaven with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is a most comforting thought. Love you good friend and best buddy!

There was never a better competitor than Coach Gary Sandbo. Always loved coaching against Smoky Valley when the Halstead Dragons played them. Many great memories I have of coaching through the years as we faced each other on the football field. He was a first class man & I respected him. Enjoyed our friendship through education & coaching. He was a true advocate for sportsmanship. My condolences to his family. He was one of the best.

I worked with Gary at Bethany College. Was assistant coach in football and baseball. He arrived at Bethany my senior year when I played football. I could tell immediately he was somebody I wanted to be. Made a very big impression on me in my life. I am very blessed to have Gary in my life. You don’t get a lot of people who make an impact like he did in my life. Prayers for Suzanne and family to be comforted in such a difficult time. Hope you are able to remember all the good times together.
