When I read that Doug had passed, I thought to myself that I won't see his smiling face anymore when I go back to visit Dad at Emerald Lake. Doug was always a 'bright light' and would always stop and visit. He did not know a stranger! His spirit will live on through all who knew him. Prayers to all of you.
Blessings & Peace,

Doug. My faith is stronger because of you. I believe when you were fighting covid deep down you was teaching me how to pray. We supported each other through DARE, our law enforcement journeys, sickness and surgeries. I will miss our messages but know you have gone home to the kingdom we all desire. Washed free. It's not good-bye it's just so long until we meet again. From the Cowboy to the Wildcat. EMAW my friend.

I so enjoyed knowing Doug as a friend and a fellow LEO.
We had a greeting between us, I’d call him Douglas and he’d call me Stanley!
Doug served his family and community with so much dedication.
Thank you Doug for your friendship.

Oh my Dougie, I can see your smile and hear your voice. Such a great friend. I remember when Austin was born. I had just lost and buried my son and you were celebrating the birth of your son. I cried my eyes out, but with your hug and kind words, I was able to celebrate your baby and my son at the same time. I'm sure you were one of the deputies who loved the Clint Eastwood cardboard man hanging in the women's bathroom. Always a good time when you crazy Deputies got together. I also remember when you worked the homicide in Lindsborg. Oh how it hurt you. I'm sure a lot of officers couldn't have done it with the professional way you did. My heart hurt for all of you. You were such a good mentor to so many. You will be talked about for years to come. Thank you for being you. I will miss you greatly, but so glad I had the privilege of working with you for my career. Fly high angel! You were one of the best.
Hugs and prayers to all who loved you.

Well..the list is pretty long of memories with Douglas. There were four of us that spent some "quality" time together.. Someone had heard about pranking by going into friend's house and moving their furniture around while they were gone. Lets just say Doug's shins probably didn't think it was that funny but three of us giggled over it! Go rest high dear friend. Go find Jimmy and Val.

My heartfelt condolences to Mary Beth, Lindsay, Austin, Jane, Sonja and all of the other family relatives and loved ones.
One memory I will never forget that I have of Doug was way back in the summer of 1963, when I was just 15 yrs. old and spent half the summer at Leo & JoAnn’s house on the farm in Smolan with all of their 4 kids. It was quite an experience for a city boy from Long Beach, California living on a Kansas farm. Doug’s dad, Leo, said oh boy we have another farm hand to help out with the chores. He put me right to work chopping down the tall weeds around the farm house and loading bales of hay on and off the trucks, etc. He taught me the drive a stick shift pick up truck and how to drive a tractor and plow a field. Note: I hadn’t taken drivers Ed yet.
One night Doug and I were feeling adventurous and built a fort out of the bales of hay in the barn. We then decided to spend the night in the fort we built. Later during the night we got spooked hearing rats moving around in the barn, plus hearing thunder outside so we went back in the house. Later in the early hours of the night of the next day we all woke up in the house to see the whole barn on fire. A big storm had came up and a lightning bolt had hit the barn and started the fire. Doug and I were thankful we had left the barn that night and we’re safe.
One recent memory I have of Doug was when I flew in to Wichita, rented a suv and drove down to visit him and Mary Beth for 10 days. This was back in October of 2021 when the Hyllningsfest was going on in Lindsborg. I attended the Salemsborg church for both Sundays I was there and heard Doug sing in the choir. He took me out to the Salemsborg cemetery out back of the church and we walked by every gravesite of our family relatives. In fact I heard that he is going to be buried right next to Lynda’s gravesite. I heard him sing 9 songs in the Smokey Valley Men’s choir during the Hyllningsfest and we had a nice dinner at the Swedish smorgasbord with MB. We also had a delicious family potluck dinner out at Lynda’s farm house, plus other meals elsewhere. These are some special memories that I will always remember.
God’s peace. Steve Anderson, Signal Hill, California

Doug, this has left a hole in our hearts. We look back through photos while smiling at the friendship we all had. When I started in dispatch we learned to watch out for each other. We were in tune to each others voice on the radio as to how the shift was going. When I lost my sisters you were there to listen to my fears and frustrations. Assured me I was going to be okay. I also thought of you as my big but younger brother. It was awesome to watch the closeness as brothers that you and Joe were. You and Joe were there for each other as life gave each of us situations in both our personal and work lives. We still chuckle that night the 3 of us drove around late one night (I was designated driver) while you and Joe hugged each other while singing. We were honored to help you celebrate your retirement by having a BBQ at our place. Many memories were discussed, shared along with much laughter that evening. We know that we have you as an Angel now watching over us. Joe & Dara

My sincere condolences to MB, Lindsay, Austin, Jane, Sonja, and all our relatives and loved ones. I pray for acceptance and understanding and compassion.
Doug led an exemplary life and I considered him a personal hero for his years of service at Salemsborg, in law enforcement, with DARE, and being the mentor that he was. I have so many fond memories of cousin Doug - playing with Camp Phillips armaments on the farm (before our folks found us doing that..!), a wild weekend at K-State in Doug's year there, and the stops I would make to see him at work on my each and every visit to McPherson. And for those who don't know, it was Doug that saved brother Ron's life in the wee hours of New Years Day many years ago...
I'm saddened by his death but happy to think of his treasured reunion with Leo, JoAnn, Lynda, Grandma Naomi, and each of the other relatives and friends who have passed.
And I think Mathew 25:21 is most appropriate: "Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master"

I was in your first D.A.R.E. Class at Moundridge. My sixth grade year. One of my favorite years in school. You were also the first police officer person I talked to, during DARE, about being molested. I later told my family, and you helped me put my abuser in jail. You helped me out when I wanted my DARE paper I wrote and you said something that was so comforting. You remembered me and said that he never suspected me when the question was asked in DARE. I’m so grateful for you and your support. When I later in life, got divorced, I remembered what you had told me, and it made me strong enough to leave my abusive husband. You will always be in my heart and forever my hero. You and your family are in my prayers. What life you lived will be remembered by others, and you will never be forgotten. Your battle on earth may be over, but we’ll see you again in Heaven. I know my mom is up there, and has already greeted you with loving arms. So, with many prayers and thanks, I say goodbye.
